my concept for an event the university is hosting

  • every time i look at my portfolio: why does all of my work suck?

i love the concept and the simplicity. but ive got to throw my two cents in.

for the most part, i agree with saying that facebook caters more towards feeding ones ego, and tumblr, more towards the soul. i used to be the person who would post 10 status a day on facebook and blow up the news feed, and it was because i knew that i had funny things to say, and for the most part, people like what i posted. people who i wasnt very close with in real life, but was friends with on facebook would come up to me and tell me how funny they thought some of the things i said on facebook were. obviously a lot of what i posted was garbage, but it seriously gave me the feeling that almost everything i thought, or everything i did was worth telling the world. i dont know what came over me. maybe it was seeing the same people posting the same boring shit, day after day, and me realizing that i was just as much of an offender as they were, but about a month and a half ago i just stopped using it. i dont think my life is any better really, its just one less thing for me to obsess over. the truth is, i dont care to listen to a bunch of people who i know but arent really friends with brag about their boring lives, and i know that they dont care to listen to me brag about mine. i dont need facebook to communicate with my friends. i have a phone, i can call and text them any time i want.

as for tumblr, it goes both ways. the whole reason i started using tumblr was because i was going to several tumblr blogs on a daily basis, and i figured it wouldnt hurt to have start my own blog. basically it just gives me something to do when im bored. what i blog is simple things that i think are cool. i dont care who likes them. i dont care how many followers i get, but it does make me happy when people follow me, or reblog me. but thats not why i do it. i have a very small amount of followers, none of whom i know in real life, and i like that because i can post and say whatever i want, and nobody has any room to judge. i like the amount of anonymous honesty on tumblr. ive had people who ill probably never meet in real life give me some excellent advice on a lot of issues, and i feel like ive reached out to others in the same way, and people genuinely take what you have to say seriously. i feel like thats one way that tumblr is different, and in my opinion much better than facebook. nobody on tumblr is going to correct you for writing the wrong form of your, or make fun of some silly picture of yourself. but of corse there are the people who take tumblr to the extreme, and i dont really see too much of this on facebook. the concept of “tumblr famous” was something that blew my mind. people who have thousands of followers, and blog specifically for the sake of gaining followers. you know these blogs; the ones who have endless photos of weed, odd future, supreme, graffiti, half naked girls in their messy rooms posing for web cams, and basically just a bunch of stuff thats popular with young people. i mean there are no rules, go ahead and post whatever you want, i know im none to judge, but i know for a fact that there are people who just post this type of stuff to make their blogs look a certain way, not because they actually have any passion for what they are blogging. and there are the people who have in their description some FAQ section saying they wont follow you unless you have over 2k followers, and to get them to promote you, you have to do this and that. to me that is just stupid. im guilty of whoring myself once for a promotion, but it was to see if it would actually work, and it didnt. i gained zero followers from the promotion. so there are the people on tumblr who dont put any soul, or any personality into their blog, but that doesnt ruin it. it is what it is. i like tumblr. if you follow me, thats awesome. ive seriously taken the time to go through all of your blogs. not that it matters, but i like seeing what people from all over the world are into.

another reason why i dont freelance:
because the client is always right. you give them something that looks nice and is set un in a way that has some sort of flow and makes sense to whoever will be reading it. and what do they do? tell you it looks nice, but they want you to completely re-do it, destroying any form of visual hierarchy that youve set up, so that your finished product is completely incoherent from any design stand point, and overall just looks like shit. sometimes the frustration isnt even worth the tiny amount of cash i stand to make from a project. not that im not grateful that someone actually wants to pay me to design things for them, but im tempted to not even ask for anything if this clients asks how much he owes me. well its your lucky day, if im not proud of my work, its free!

because running 3 CS5 programs on a 6-year-old macbook with 1gb of ram is about as fun as watching paint dry.

thats why i dont freelance.
